The Perfect 3 Day Itinerary

Flagstaff, nestled amidst the towering Ponderosa pines of northern Arizona, this 7,000 ft. high town captivated me. The city has a blend of natural wonder, history, great food, and vibes with modern charm. This high-altitude city sits at the base of the San Francisco Peaks and serves as a gateway to some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the American Southwest. While most people think of the hot, dry climate of Arizona, this high desert town offers all 4 seasons!

Do not just drive through- Make A Stop In Flagstaff!

Flagstaff offers more than outdoor recreation. The city thrives as a cultural hub, with museums, historic sites, and a lively arts scene. Its location along the iconic Route 66 adds a touch of nostalgia, making it a must-visit for road-trippers seeking adventure and a taste of Americana. In the past, I drove past Flagstaff. I remember it when I was young on my way to the Grand Canyon and again 2 years ago when I visited the Mighty Five. What I noticed was how different the terrain was with its massive ponderosa pine forest and rocky, high terrain. I told myself I would return and this is why I traveled to visit this western, high desert town of Flagstaff.

A Glimpse into Flagstaff’s History

Unique Things To Do In Flagstaff, Arizona- A city for foodies and adventures! – Travels of Sarah Fay (2)

Flagstaff’s history dates back to the late 19th century. Settlers came from the east coast and many crossed via the settlement that at first was a sheep camp. The name is reportedly inspired by a ponderosa pine flagpole erected to celebrate the U.S. Centennial in 1876. While the town was founded in 1876, it was incorporated in 1928. The arrival of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad transformed Flagstaff from a small settlement into a key transportation hub for the region. Later it became a famous stop on Historic Route 66 since it is the highest point on the trail.

Over the years, Flagstaff became a center for the lumber, cattle, and sheep industries. The city’s story is strongly linked to the surrounding landscape, from the volcanic fields that frame it to the indigenous tribes who have called the area home for thousands of years. Today, Flagstaff boasts a population of around 77 thousand residents, although the larger metro area is around 145 thousand. The city balances its rich heritage with modern growth, drawing visitors and new residents with its unique mix of history, natural beauty, and community spirit. And, I must say the community was so inviting.

Day 1 Itinerary Flagstaff AZ

I drove to Flagstaff from the Grand Canyon about 74 miles away to spend 3 days in fantastic Flagstaff. As I drove into town, they had some early snow this first week of November and it was quite enchanting. I couldn’t wait to stay at the wonderful and historic Bespoke Inn Flagstaff.

The Bespoke is a fully renovated 1894 historic and charming boutique hotel with a great mixture of historic and modern decor. The hotel itself is on the National Register of Historic Places. I couldn’t wait to check in, but first I had my first stop at the Museum of Northern Arizona. But first I stopped for coffee at Matador Coffee Roasters. Matador Coffee brews its own coffee and I had an awesome latte and they serve breakfast too.

10 am

At 10 am, I went to the Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA), an amazing stop to learn more about this wonderful region. The museum was formed in 1928 to help preserve the culture of the local indigenous tribes as well asshare more information about the Colorado Plateau that is in the area. It is open from 10 am to 5 pm and generally closed on Tuesdays for part of the year. The cost is reasonable at $15/adult. Interesting parts include permanent exhibits as well as over 800,000 objects, and artifacts, including interests like anthropology, biology, fine art, and geology.

Where to eat Lunch in Flagstaff, Arizona?

I was dying to shop and enjoy more of Route 66 so I just grabbed a sandwich quickly, but some restaurants in this area include:

  • MartAnne’s Breakfast Palace This is voted the top Mexican restaurant and opens for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Route 66. What’s your preference, green or red?
  • Proper Meats + Provisions Proper Meats is a quick way to grab a bite to eat in or take with you, from deli sandwiches, fries, chicken, breakfast, sandwiches, etc. But they are closed on Monday and they close early at 5 pm or 6 pm depending on the day. It’s also on Route 66.

Afternoon

Walk Around Historic Downtown to find outdoors shops, coffees shops, and explore the Famous Route 66 that goes right through Flagstaff.

Afternoon Tea? Steep Leaf Lounge Well I often take a coffee break, this time I stopped at this fantastic tea shop and had a Chai Latte; it was the best Chai Latte I ever had and I highly recommend it.

4 pm Relax at the Bespoke Inn

Next I headed to the hotel so that I could check and change for a great dinner. The hotel is beautiful and each room is themed with quaint touches that make this feel like home. I love boutique hotels because the service as well as experience feels personalized. I stayed in the Gianni and Donatella Room, it was spacious, cozy, and it had a fireplace perfect for the cooler weather Flagstaff experiences.

Dinner 6:30 Atria Restaurant

Unique Things To Do In Flagstaff, Arizona- A city for foodies and adventures! – Travels of Sarah Fay (6)

Atria is an amazing place to have farm-fresh American cuisine in line with the season. It is located in the heart of the historic area and loved trying its wonderful offerings. I sat at the chef’s table which is perfect for solo travelers. Here you can sit and enjoy the best view while they cook the freshest food right in front of you. I found everything I ate delicious and highly recommend it. To start grab a cacio e pepe, or pork belly, and for an entree try the smoked short ribs or the Branzino are excellent choices. Honestly there was not going wrong here. Save room for dessert because they make seasonal desserts that are eye-catching!

I am not the only one that loves it. Atria received the 2024 awards from Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Award and Open Table Diner’s Choice Award. This is definitely a finer dining establishment, but it is worth it. They put so much care in the presentation as well as their service.

After Dinner: After walking the historic downtown a bit more, I wanted to return to the hotel to rest up for the next day since I planned to do more hiking in some of the nearby parks.

The Museum Club One place you may want to check out is The Museum Club, which is a 1930’s era log-styled building that hosted live bands including famous folks like Willie Nelson years ago. It too is on Route 66 and you may want to check their schedule online.

Day 2 Itinerary Flagstaff

Today I plan to see more of the natural beauty with its’ National Parks and have a unique tour of what’s below the surface of Flagstaff. There are so many options, but I am a fan of national parks and unique experiences.

9 am Breakfast – Today I planned to see more of the great outdoors but before that, I had to get breakfast! So I stopped at The Toasted Owl. This cafe is wonderful and I loved the quirky owl and had a wonderful breakfast. I got the prossiouto and brie omelette and the coffee here was served in the cutest mugs.

They have many great breakfast options including eggs, pancakes, etc. but they also have vegan options. You can eat indoors; there is an outdoor area, but that is closed for the winter. Then I was off to explore more nature in the area and enjoy a scenic ride. My first stop is Sunset Crater Volcano.

Visit the 3 National Monuments Near Flagstaff

Unique Things To Do In Flagstaff, Arizona- A city for foodies and adventures! – Travels of Sarah Fay (9)

10 am Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument (U.S. National Park Service) – Over 1,000 years ago the land here split or formed a fissure about 6 miles that allowed lava and molten rock to pour out over the land to form Sunset Crater Volcano. It is more similar to the volcano lava flows that you see in Hawaii. It’s a great place to explore. Over time the area blossomed to allow more flora to bloom in the area. It’s quite unique and it’s great to explore especially if you like to hike a bit.

You can do 2 short hikes at the park, namely the Lava Flow Trail (a .8 mile loop) where you get closer to the crater, and the Bonita Vista Trail (.3 miles) where you can view the area around you. Both trails are accessible for even those with limited mobility. While I didn’t have time, there is a longer Volcanology Tour with Rangers and other hikes, but you may want to check that out with the park depending on how much time you have.

Sunset Crater is run by the National Park Services. It’s free if you have the America The Beautiful Pass. Here is the link to Entrance Passes (U.S. National Park Service). Otherwise, the daily pass that includes parking is $15-25. Or you can buy the 3 combined park pass for $45/yr. that includes Sunset Crater, Walnut Canyon, and Wupatki National Monument. This is great if you plan to stay a few days to explore more.

Scenic Loop Drive

After Sunset Crater I took a ride along the scenic route that took me to Wupatki National Monument. The 36-mile loop road is a great way to see the meadows and the lovely pine forest. The loop road takes about1 hour to drive and Wupatki is located directly on the loop.

Wupatki National Monument (U.S. National Park Service)

Unique Things To Do In Flagstaff, Arizona- A city for foodies and adventures! – Travels of Sarah Fay (11)

Wupatki represents the footprints of the Pueblo indigenous people that came to settle here 1100 years ago. It was a cooler time and they settled here and set up a community to trade and share their culture. Wupatki is situated between the Painted Desert and the ponderosa highlands of Northern Arizona. At one time, 2,000 people lived here, but as the area became drier they had to move to other areas in the 1200’s. While the village remnants remain, you can just imagine how wonderful it must have been.

This is also considered importantancestral lands to 13 different tribes. Pricing is the same as Sunset Crater including free if you have the America The Beautiful Pass.Definitely do not miss the major three pueblos out of the five or so you can visit, the famous ones all start with a W. If you only have time for 1 go to Wupataki and see the famous blowhole.

Lunch

I brought a sandwich and drink to eat while I was out at the monuments. Perhaps grab a to-go meal from Proper Meats + Provisions mentioned above. I love picnics, don’t you? After such a fun time seeing these national parks, I wanted to learn more about the past of Flagstaff so that was next. But I wanted to get below the surface.

Flagstaff Underground Tour

Unique Things To Do In Flagstaff, Arizona- A city for foodies and adventures! – Travels of Sarah Fay (12)

4:30 pm Flagstaff Underground – If you want to actually understand more behind the pretty historic exterior of Flagstaff, I highly suggest a tour with Flagstaff Underground. This 75-minute tour takes you to explore the town and the underground of the city. It was cool to learn more about the local folklore and the Wild West beginnings of Flagstaff. This tour takes you underground to explore the original old Flagstaff. I have done this type of tour before so I looked forward to seeing the town at a different level, underground as well as learn the history behind the storefronts of the downtown. I highly recommend it. It was certainly entertaining.

Have Italian Fresh Pasta

DinnerCafe Stella – After such a full day of walking, I had a great appetite and Cafe Stella met that challenge. This fantastic Italian restaurant makes its food from scratch. I truly loved . Everything is fresh and made from scratch, it isn’t fast food but it surely is delicious.

(After dinner I just walked around to see some of the local stores, etc., but I had more to do the next day, so I planned to rest for my next day’s hikes, etc.)

Day 3 Itinerary

Well, I am coming to the end of my trip in Flagstaff and it’s time to check out. Then, I have to finish up by seeing the Walnut Canyon National Monument. I remember when I was younger, coming to see the cliff dwellings by ancient indigenous tribes. On this trip, I wanted to get closer to see more cliff dwellings and Walnut Canyon would help me see more of them. But first, I needed some coffee!

10 am Brewed Awakenings Brewed Awakenings Coffee Co. had great coffee, as well as breakfast burritos and sandwiches. As you can see I love a good coffee.

Walnut Canyon National Monument

Unique Things To Do In Flagstaff, Arizona- A city for foodies and adventures! – Travels of Sarah Fay (14)

11 am – Walnut Canyon National Monument (U.S. National Park Service) – Walnut Canyon was home to many indigenous people throughout the centuries. They built their dwellings on the cliffs and farmed along the rims of the canyon. The area was robust with wildlife that allowed them to live there. Over time they moved away from this area but left these historic villages and dwellings along the cliffs. This park/national monument is to preserve these places and share the cultural history of these people.

The one-mile, roundtrip Island Trail includes 25 dwellings that you can access. This trail is a little bit more strenuous since you are heading down into the canyon. The shorter Rim Trail is an easier hike and you can overlook the area below. It is a wonderful place to see the Pueblos that were inhabited over 800 years ago.

One Last Coffee for the RoadMacy’s European Coffee House This is reportedly one of the best places for coffee, pastries, etc. but when I went it was under renovation, so I had to get mine to go. I wanted to mention it since it was mentioned by so many of the locals.

A MUST-SEE IN FLAGSTAFF:

After having my coffee and a few hours driving around to see the beautiful scenery, it was time to head out. But I must discuss one place I didn’t get to go to since it was closed for a major renovation. I was dying to visit the Lowell Observatory and wanted to discuss how Flagstaff is the original Dark Sky City.

If you are from a larger town/city, you know you don’t see many stars shining if there is a lot of light pollution from the area. Well, some cities like Flagstaff have committed to lowering light pollution so you can have clear skies to see the stars and planets. Flagstaff was the first city that was certified as a Dark Sky Place. Now there are over 200 places certified per International Dark Sky Places | DarkSky International. I always loved a good observatory and Flagstaff is home to the renowned Lowell Observatory.

Lowell Observatory

Lowell Observatory – While I did not get to visit Lowell Observatory since they were about to unveil their new renovations, it is something I will have to come back for. This astrological observatory has been located in Flagstaff for over 100years, founded in 1894. The clear skies in the area greatly helped it be located here, plus the railroads, access, etc.

The dwarf planet Pluto was discovered here back in 1931. In 1963, the observatory was used to train astronauts and map the moon that later landed on the moon. It’s played an important part in US history. While it was closed, it will reopen on November 14th and maybe you could go and try one of the telescopes to stargaze! What a wonderful experience.

Directions on How to Get There

You can reach Flagstaff by car, air, or train:

  • By Car: Flagstaff lies at the junction of Interstates 17 and 40, just a two-hour drive from Phoenix and a four-hour drive from Las Vegas. Weather and Best Time to Visit Flagstaff AZ

Flagstaff experiences four distinct seasons and I recommend coming on a shoulder season depending on the type of weather and things you want to see or do. I do recommend that you bring layers of clothes since days can be warmer than the evening or you may hit a cooler few days like I did, but it was still a great trip since I brought layers. I wished I had my ski clothes since the top of the ski trails ended up opening while I was in town. Late spring and early fall are my choices.

Safety for Travelers

Flagstaff is a very safe destination and found the folks here so welcoming. This was especially true for traveling solo. Just like any travel destination, just exercise standard precautions, keep valuables looked, etc. I felt perfectly fine traveling solo here.

Flagstaff’s central location makes it an ideal base for exploring nearby attractions:

  • Grand Canyon National Park: Just 80 miles north, perfect for breathtaking views and hiking. I traveled here on the way to Flagstaff and have been here twice and many of you know it is a major US destination.
  • Sedona: Known for its stunning red rock formations and spiritual energy, only an hour’s drive south. This too is one of my stops and I have been here before, it’s a beautiful place to see, although note that it is more expensive.
  • Petrified Forest National Park: Discover fossilized trees and painted desert landscapes. I have been here on one of my cross-country trips and it certainly is a great stop depending on which way you travel to town.
  • Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend: Travel to Page, AZ, for these world-famous sights that offer incredible photo opportunities. I have been here before on a past trip and it too is unique.
